Hantungan ng Alaala Space Place print exhibition

The Cultural Center of the Philippines presents “Space/Place,” a groundbreaking exhibition showcasing the works of the Association of Pinoyprintmakers (AP) at the newly opened Bulwagang Roberto Chabet. The exhibition delves into the multifaceted concept of space, drawing inspiration from Michel Foucault’s Heterotopia and exploring the interplay between physical and psychological spaces.

“Space/Place” features a diverse collection of printmaking techniques, including relief, intaglio, serigraphy, and lithography. Each artist brings their unique perspective to the exhibition, using printmaking as a medium to capture the essence of space and its impact on human experience.

Marz Aglipay’s “Ang Hantungan ng Ala-ala” (Memory’s resting place), is a poignant piece dedicated to those lost during the pandemic lockdown. Aglipay reflects on the missed opportunities for traditional mourning and the lingering presence of absent loved ones in our daily lives.

Aglipay elaborates on her print. “There are familiar faces that I have grown accustomed to in my capacity as a writer. Some of these people I’ve grown close to while some remain as familiar strangers. This sense of familiarity and being aware of each other’s existence is a source of personal comfort. However, the pandemic lockdown hindered us from mourning in the traditional sense where people gather.

It has left me feeling the absence of those who have passed on like any other day when they are living their own lives. Now that we have returned outside, I still catch myself looking for these people among the familiar crowds we once frequented together. We may not have the chance to mourn, so we take comfort in keeping the memories of their best selves with us.”

“Space/Place” invites viewers to embark on a journey through the complexities of space, challenging them to reconsider their perceptions of the physical and psychological environments they inhabit. The exhibition serves as a testament to the power of printmaking as a tool for exploring and expressing the intricacies of human experience.

The exhibition took place at Bulwagang Roberto Chabet, Bulwagang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box Theater). It ran from May 16, 2023 until June 18, 2023
